This little remote control car is happy to be moving forward! I had a remote control car when I was younger, and I thought it was pretty awesome to be able to drive something. I think that might be part of the allure for children. Very rarely do they get a chance to be in control and a remote control toy gives them all the power!

I couldn't sleep-in this morning, even though it's Saturday. I got up, made some coffee, and decided to play with my watercolors. All the stores have Valentine's Day stuff out, so it makes sense that when I sat down to draw and paint, I decided to make everything pink, purple and red. Anyways, these two illustrations are what I came up with. I wish pink fawns with heart markings really existed. I also wish bears wore suspenders in the wild.

Giraffe Plush

I made this giraffe for my friend's baby for Christmas (but only just gave it to her today. oops!) I really enjoy making my own patterns for toys and designing how their faces, limbs, and other add-ons will look. I used a giraffe patterned cotton for the body and felt for the details. I think it turned out pretty cute and I am definitely getting better at using my sewing machine! If you read this blog, I hope you don't mind because I love the satisfaction of creating things out of fabric with my own hands and it is fun to share the results with you!

I remember looking through yearbooks in the library from the 1960's and 1970's and at one point there had been. The costumes looked so glamorous and the job of baton twirler appeared to require a lot of skill!

New Business Cards

My new business cards arrived today. They are nice and glossy and I liked the idea of having a small teaser image to show what my style looks like. Sometimes it's easier to show someone how you paint rather than trying to explain it. Last time I ordered business cards I ordered 1000. This time I only ordered 500 because I enjoyed doing the mini painting so much! When I run out of these I will probably do another small painting and go with a similar layout.

Illustration Friday - Prepare

Shortly after Christmas I started to get seed catalogs in the mail. In the winter, it's always nice to prepare for the gardening season. I am itching to get my hands dirty again! I'll probably plant tomatoes, peas, lettuce and radishes like always. I am considering planting a few soy beans too so that we can enjoy some edamame at home! Oh, and maybe some eggplants, onions and potatoes too! I also love to add a few new flowers to my beds every year too! My husband built raised beds for us a few years ago and we made some PVC frames that can either hold netting (to keep deer and company out!) or plastic for cold frames. I'm definitely going to be prepared for spring either way!

I had a vintage 100% wool Lacoste sweater that my mom gave to me (probably from the late 70's) and it was a beautiful dark pink color but over the years some holes formed in the front. I couldn't get rid of it so it has been sitting around in my closet for years. I finally decided that I would felt it by washing it in hot water and tumble drying it. It made a really nice felt and I used part of it to make this little cat plush. I used the sweater for the back and the face. I used a pretty Amy Butler fabric for the front. It is so fun to make squishy little plush toys! I think I might make a bear for my mom out of some of the rest of the sweater. She collects bears and it would be neat to make it out of a familiar sweater. I also have plans to make a few other similar projects. The problem is, when I start sewing, I just don't want to stop! I love it! I have a healthy load of freelance right now too so I try to fit the sewing in when I can.

It seems a little morbid, but a grave seemed like the most extreme example of being grounded. I did a graphite drawing in my sketchbook and scanned it into Photoshop to color it digitally.

Small Painting

I decided to do a mini painting of part of the drawing from my previous post. I liked the connection between the little girl and the cat. I changed the facial features of the little girl; something a little sweeter and less cartoon-like. This little painting, that measures about 3"x5.5", is going to be used for my new business card. I ordered them from Got Print (my first time using them) and I will share them when they arrive!

The love of my sweet kitties is one of the biggest highlights of my life. I adore their little furry bodies and their soft purrs. I even delight in their naughty behavior. (Shhh! don't tell them that!) I think a lot of people count on the unconditional love of their pets in such a conditional world! I am planning on trying to do illustration Friday a little more frequently this year. I would like to try and do it every week with a few exceptions of holiday times and vacations. ( I believe rest is important too!) Last year it didn't work out very well, as I was working on two children's books simultaneously! I would love to have to juggle such a workload again, but for now I don't have any long-term contracts. In the meantime, and in this wonderful new year I have made a short list of things that I would like to try to accomplish:

Create my own dummy book for the Iowa SCBWI April conference
Re-design my business cards
Do at least 3 promotional mailers (4 would be ideal)
Go on at least one sketch "field-trip" per month
Participate in Illustration Friday more frequently
Craft, Sew and Experiment More!

I decided to try my hand at the SCBWI illustration challenge that was initiated by illustrator Tomie dePaola. Regardless of the results, I am really glad I participated because I think I ended up with a nice new portfolio piece. The above text is the excerpt that participants were given to inspire an image. Just a few sketches of some of the furry little visitors that I often see wandering around my yard. Of course, the deer around here don't usually wear scarves! (The squirrels certainly DO hoard acorns, though!) I think the squirrels and deer are really enjoying our mild December so far. They are much more active than they normally would be this time of year.

I was asked to create a workshop as part of the Des Moines Art Center's Annual Art Noir Holiday Studio. My holiday bunting project was one of several that included glass blowing, an ugly mitten decorating contest, gift tags, and origami ornaments. Its always a fun event and this was my second year doing a project to teach. I met a lot of fun people and everyone seemed really excited to make their own bunting decoration to cheer up their home! I created three examples to give people a little inspiration and an idea of how the project would look when completed. From there, people got really creative and had really awesome ideas! It is always wonderful to be around creative folk and this event was no exception!

Last Saturday I got to hang out at Beaverdale Books and sign my two Christmas books during the annual Beaverdale Shop Hop. It was really cool to be able to do my first book signing in my own little neighborhood within Des Moines! I managed to sign a lot of books and it was great to see everyone! Thanks to all the friends that came out to support me! You guys made the night!

At the Des Moines Art Center, where I work, we are working on a collaborative sketchbook for the 2012 World Tour series. The top image is my contribution for our theme of "sandwich". I used a whole spread right smack dab in the middle of the book. I definitely broke the rule of putting important things in the gutter of the spread, but it's a sketchbook! There aren't supposed to be any rules! Let's just say, I would never do that if I was working on an actual book project! The art director would most definitely have to speak to me about it! Anyways, I decided to do an all-American waitress named Bea serving up the daily special. (basically all the stuff on one sandwich that has an expiration date of tomorrow!) I used stamps, coloreds pencil, marker and acrylic paint. I am so glad I got to participate in the sketchbook project even if it's only in the smallest way! I think it is such a cool concept, I just couldn't commit to doing a full book on my own with my schedule right now. I was super excited to be asked to talk about my work and my new books on our local news station! Mollie Cooney was so nice and I owe her so much gratitude for giving me a little press! The video is almost 5 minutes and it aired yesterday (Sunday) morning. I managed to wake up early just to watch it. My favorite part is near the end when they show my little studio buddy, Oliver! One more thing, does my voice really sound like that? It's weird to see yourself and hear yourself on camera!

My cousin's wedding was last weekend in Washington DC and my husband and I managed to make it into a little vacation. We visited all the major landmarks and got a really good feel for the city. All in all, we had an incredibly good time and really enjoyed the area! A major highlight of the trip was being able to see my book, "Santa's Secret Story", in an actual Pauline Books and Media store that happened to be in Alexandria. From my house the nearest Pauline stores would probably be Chicago or St. Louis and the 2 hour plane ride is quicker than driving to either one. (not that I would buy a plane ticket just to go to a bookstore... but it was convenient to have one in a place we were going anyways!) The above picture is my book on a shelf display (note the Tomie dePaola right next to mine. Cool, right?!) The below picture is the Pauline storefront on a lovely November day!

I finished coloring this today using Copic markers and Prisma pencils. In my previous post, I shared the black and white line work which has a certain beauty to it. I really love color though! For this piece the color gave the illustration more dimension, texture and mood. I really hope they like their gift! I'm excited for the wedding!

My first picture book, "The Twelve Days of Christmas, In Texas-- That Is" has arrived! Its so shiny and smells so new! Its sort of surreal to see my own books on a shelf next to some of my other Christmas favorites! The funny thing is, I am already starving to do another picture book. It is so satisfying to see the finished product and see the smiles on faces when people see my work! Happy dance time!

I've been taking a tatting class at the Des Moines Art Center for the past few weeks. I'm finding that I like the patterns that lace-making inspires. The above image was our first real project with finished examples of tatting. They are little floral rings that I glued to a card. I also added some subtle acrylic details in white. The second image was partially inspired by tatting, but also all of the Indian designs I have been looking at. My dear friend is getting married and since she is Indian, her wedding will also be. Its such a colorful culture and I love looking at all the intricacies in the patterns of fabric, jewelry, paper products and just about everywhere else! The truth is, I usually don't notice how things inspire me until they are done. Then, when I see them side by side, it becomes apparent! I'll be sure to share some more tatting projects if I manage to finish some larger ones.

For the past three years, my hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan has hosted a very unique art experience called Artprize. You can learn more about it here: Artprize.org (if you want to know the particulars or possibly participate.) I've serendipitously been able to attend each year so far and as it becomes more popular, the artists have come from further and further away. My favorite thing about Artprize is the way it brings lots of different types of art to self described "non-art-people". Its magnificent! Oh! And I have really been enjoying using my new iPhone! What took me so long?! Its great! I especially love the Instagram app because it makes photos look more like memories. If you are using Instagram, find me as candacecamling.

My friend is getting married very soon and I am throwing her a Bridal Shower/Bachelorette Party. She is having a traditional Indian wedding so I wanted to bring that flair into some of the decor. I just completed this sash for her to wear during the festivities. I'm happy with how it turned out. I also created these invitations using different papers, a craft punch, brads, and a little Adobe Illustrator design. Can't wait to get the party going!

I am obsessed with India and its culture. I love the colors, the people and all of the festivals. I hope to be able to visit there someday! I was sitting on my front porch talking to my dad today when the UPS truck pulled up. Every time I see a UPS truck in the neighborhood, I am secretly hoping to receive a box of my books. Well, today was the day for "Santa's Secret Story" published by Pauline Books and Media. I immediately opened the box and held it up to show the delivery man (who was far less excited than I). He shrugged and managed a lackluster "wow" as he walked back to his truck. My neighbor pulled up a few seconds later and was a much better partner to share the excitement with! She and I leafed through the shiny new books. What an excellent day! Holding a book in your hands is a wonderful feeling. Holding a book that you helped to create is downright magical!

If a child shows you a picture they have drawn, don't ask, "What is it?" Instead, ask them to tell you about it. This piece of advice has come in handy as a kids art teacher. Especially when presented with the most mysterious of drawings! I drew this in my sketchbook and then colored it in Photoshop.

I used Lotta Jansdotter's book, Simple Sewing, for the basic shape of this apron. I embellished it with a different pocket and used some really fun food fabric that I bought out of a remnant bin several years ago. I think this would be great as a hostess apron for a BBQ; its certainly a conversation starter! Oh, how I love anthropomorphic foods!

I spent last week in California visiting a friend. We managed to squeeze Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Sacramento, and a day by the sea into the week. Nothing calms me or inspires me as much as the ocean. I love all the wildlife, the seashells, the seaweed, the landscape, the smells, the tides going out and coming in; everything!

I spent a good amount of this morning creating mini wearable collages. I have had a button making machine for a few years now and have used it to make several types of buttons. (often featuring my own illustrations.) For this lot of buttons I used found papers, vintage illustrations, vintage texts and magazine clippings. I tried to put together images, words and patterns that spoke to me. I think the chicken buttons are my favorite. I'm really into chickens in general right now! Probably because I consider myself a bit of an urban farmer (but only grow vegetables at the moment) and chickens would be awesome to have!

I did a drawing of flowering plants that are perennials here in Iowa. I have each of these plants in my own garden. Can you guess what plants they are? Aside from illustration, gardening is one my my most favorite activities and I especially like when illustration is inspired by gardening!

This started as a free form watercolor piece working wet into wet. As it was drying I pulled some of the color out where the face was and also added a few watercolor details where the eyes, nose and mouth are. I used a colored pencil to tighten the piece up and some white acrylic to add highlights. I love that this wild child started out as a gestural watercolor! (It sort of fits, considering my lack of planning in lieu of playing.) I wish I could have a crown of wildflowers and insect wings!

Making these bracelets made me think of my trips to summer camp and swimming in the lake! Plus, colorful friendship bracelets are all the rage right now! SCBWI Wisconsin Illustrator's Intensive

This past weekend I headed up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for an illustrator's intensive with Simon & Schuster art director Laurent Linn. When I signed up for the program, it came with an assignment. Participants were given two stories to choose from and each person had to choose a scene to illustrate. We sent sketches to Laurent a few months prior to the event and he responded with comments to make it better. This is the sketch I initially sent to him:{Sketch on Cardstock, 2011}

Some of his comments for improvement were that that characters were too crowded and that the point of view seemed too high. This is how I fixed that:

Laurent didn't get to see our revised sketches but he was pleasantly surprised to see the final had changed so much. (it's often hard to break away for your initial vision and I think it can be hard to admit that something isn't working and that you need to rethink a composition.) Overall, it was very affirming to hear that Laurent liked the solution I had arrived at. He also liked the period details and color choices I had made (yay!). Overall, the intensive was really interesting. We got to see how different each artist's style was and their interpretations of different scenes. I took a lot of notes as Laurent critiqued each piece. He has so many nuggets of wisdom and was so nice! He has a really genuine respect and passion for the art of children's books and I think everyone in attendance got something out of his visit.

Summer Respite

On Saturday, I finished the illustrations for my second children's book and breathed a sigh of relief. My deadline was closing in and it was a race against time to get them to the publisher so that they could get the book to print. UPS should be dropping that off any time today! I'm proud to say, " I DID IT!". In 5 1/2 months I painted over 40 illustrations in alkyd oils. Whew! I'm not going to lie and say I loved every minute of it. Who loves every minute of their job? To my surprise, I did love an awful lot of it though! I know this is the career for me. I believe strongly in children's literature! I am so happy to be contributing to it in a small way and so grateful for the chances I have been given to do it. Looking forward to some nice slow summer days, working on some portfolio pieces, and who knows what else!

A little over a month ago I was contacted by Joe Lawler at Juice Magazine (which is a free weekly magazine targeted at young professionals in Des Moines). Joe Lawler and Eric Rowley came over to my house to interview me and take a few pictures. It was really fun and Joe and Eric were both really nice. The world of a freelance artist is pretty lonely so its always fun when someone wants to chat. Its even more fun when they want to talk about something your passionate about! The printed copies will be available tomorrow and I plan to pick up a few copies to send to my family and a few to keep for myself. A huge and grateful thanks to Joe and Eric for the article!

Oliver Makes a Cameo Appearance

I'm hard at work on illustrations for my second book. In one of the illustrations, the main character is sitting on her bed and the art director suggested that she have a little pal to comfort her. I decided to draw a cat in. As I was painting I decided to make the markings like Oliver (one of my beloved and naughty tabbies). Voila! Oliver makes a cameo appearance in the story. Of course, in order to get Oliver to sign the release papers and consent to the use of his likeness, my husband and I stretched the truth and told him the entire story was about him. Little white lies folks, little white lies!

Des Moines Art Center "Vault" Auction

Thursday night I had the pleasure of attending "Vault: Letting Our Guard Down" a fundraising auction with donations of over 100 artists from Iowa and around the world. I donated the American toad painting above. I have worked as a faculty member at the Art Center for the past few years and I loved the idea of being able to give back to my workplace and thank them for all they have given me. My husband and I were there during the middle of the silent auction and only stayed a short time. With over 350 guests in attendance in such a small place it was uncomfortably warm and we couldn't afford to bid on anything anyways so we took a few pictures, said "hi" to a few people, snagged an hor d'oeuvre or two and left. At that time my piece was up to $150, which made me proud and happy. I don't know if it ever topped that but I was more than ecstatic that it made it that high. Its not that I don't think it is worth that much, but I have donated artwork for charity auction before and seen it sell for ridiculously low amounts. (which makes it barely worth your time. And its embarassing) The Art Center handled the bidding nicely. They started all works at $50 and people could bid in $25 increments. I was contacted in early March by ESPN Magazine. They were looking for someone to draw some simple whiteboard images for a story about Drake University. You can read the story behind the boys' feature in ESPN Mag HERE. I had a great day working with photographer Kevin Miyazaki and his assistants. The photo-shoot went well and I think the picture turned out great. I am a little sad I missed the newsstand version, but was glad that I looked and found it online too! A Day like this is the kind of day that make me love being an illustrator. You never know when you are going to get a call that lands you in a different world. Imagine me, in my little purple flowered shirt and cardigan, shaking hands with a sea of the tallest and biggest group of young men I have ever seen in real life. They were just as excited as I was!

My new niece (by marriage but the family tree is too confusing to delve into) sent me this sweet little package earlier this week. It contained a few of my very favorite things; flowers, accessories and a pretty little touch of patriotism. Her husband is currently serving in the United States Marines and my husband is a Marine Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. (this is only the first of several parallels that seem to link us.) Jenn is a creator, a thrifter, and seems to share a similar sense of humor. I met her for the first time during Christmas because geographical locations make regular visits impossible. We have so many talented people in our group and there are many published authors and illustrators. I'm excited to join the ranks as a published member at next year's conference. During the conference I had a scheduled portfolio review with Caldecott winner and author/illustrator Eric Rohmann. He had wonderful ideas to help improve my chances with art directors and to help polish my portfolio. I was also able to meet Lin Oliver, the co-founder of SCBWI. She is incredibly sweet and very invested in helping writers and illustrators find their wings!

It has been weeks since my last post, which is an eternity for this blog. At the moment I am very close to finishing paintings for my first book and ready to start painting the second book. These are a few sketches I did about a month ago when spring still seemed like it would never arrive. Now, while I spend my days painting I am configuring in my head which vegetables I will plant soon and how I will arrange them in my garden. Crocuses and daffodils are pushing up and even weeds are a pleasant sight at this early stage of spring!

I bought a mixed media journal the other day so that I could get out some of the junk thats been floating around in my head. My book projects are very calculated and predictable, which isn't a problem but sometimes I like to sit down and create without knowing where something will go. I also like to make lists, organize things and record ideas for later. This Strathmore Mixed Media Visual Journal is satisfying that need. I get in a little time before I start my work day and a little before bed. Its also nice to finish something in one day. Most of the things I have going on in my professional life take several days so the sense of finishing a page is really fulfilling. I'm also really excited to start thinking about gardening again!

I don't have any artwork to share in this post, even though my studio is full of new art right now. I look forward to being able to show a few pieces later, but for now I offer a photo of me as the Mona Lisa!

Here is what is going on in my art life right now:

1. I finished my 9th illustration for the book I am working on. That puts me at the halfway point! 9 more to go and then I can ship them off to the publisher!

2. I just signed up to attend the 2011 Iowa SCBWI conference. I am looking forward to seeing friends made at previous conferences and making new friends! Also, excited about a portfolio review and great information.

3. I just sent sketches to my other publisher for my second children's book and should get edits back sometime this week.

I'm busy as busy can be, but enjoying the process and seeing a lot of improvement in my illustration and book spread composition skills.

Rapunzel

I'm doing a little demo for a class tomorrow so I put together a drawing. The class is focusing on illustrating fairy tales so I kept with that idea and decided on Rapunzel. I had really long hair as a kid and always wore a long braid so I sort of identify with Rapunzel in that respect. If it turns out alright, I'll post the finished piece later.

I sent her a few and this is what I got in return. I LOVE it! Its a really wonderful colored pencil piece and probably one of the nicest art cards I have received to date. I had a wonderful opportunity to see Caldecott winning illustrator David Diaz speak at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska a little over a week ago. He was very funny and very open about his process and how he approaches illustrating books. He showed sketches and promotional materials for his most current book entitled, "Me, Frida". I had my picture taken with him and asked him to sign my sketchbook... which ended in 6 pages of sharpie sketches! My friend and fellow illustrator, Erin Taylor, was able to coordinate this event with the Golden Kite Awards exhibit that was curated by Diaz and is now showing at the Joslyn Art Museum. It was overwhelming to see so many original illustrations from the best in the industry dating back to the 1970's. Illustrators included Melissa Sweet, Tomie de Paola, Trina Schart Hyman, David Shannon, and so many more! The Golden Kite Awards show is a traveling exhibit so if it comes to your area, I highly recommend seeing it!

You know how some writers do free-writing exercises to stay fresh and inspire new ideas? I like to do the same thing with drawing in my sketchbook. (I think a lot of illustrators/artists do!) Last night I did the top image in my sketchbook. When I ran out of room, I went to bed feeling satisfied that I had emptied my mind for the day. That is a typical looking page for night sketching. Its disorganized and random. However, the second image is a morning sketch with space to breathe and the items are related. This is typical of morning sketching. Is anyone else like this? Do you find the later in the day it gets, the more chaotic your sketchbook gets? I think its sort of amusing, and something I only just noticed about myself recently... even if I have been doing it for years!

I made these paper crafts for a friend's baby shower and saved them after the festivities were done so I could decorate for Valentine's Day. I watched and read about a lot of tutorials on crepe paper crafts and flowers and I didn't find anything that I especially liked. After experimenting with a few ideas of my own, I came up with these little pinwheel shapes by creasing the crepe paper and forming circles. I used a craft punch to make the center shape of the pinwheel and taped them together. Paper crafting is one of my favorite activities and I had fun creating these.

I planted several Pilea plants in vintage teacups as Christmas presents for friends this year. Pilea plants have tiny leaves and are really easy to grow. I used a Martha Stewart craft punch to make the rabbit shapes and glued them onto toothpicks (added eyes and rosy cheeks with a marker too!). I made a little care guide to go with the plants, wrapped them up and sent them on their happy little way! The care guide was made using watercolor images that I Photoshopped together. Maybe you'll recognize the imagery from this post!

{Infinity Scarf, 2011}

My other recent project, that I made last night, was an infinity scarf. If you have followed this blog for awhile, you know I dabble in sewing. I really like the satisfaction of making something useful with my own hands. Part of the reason I made this is due to my New Year's resolution. For the year of 2011 I vow to not buy any new clothing. I also started a new blog to chronicle my year of handmade, upcycling and coping with not shopping. (Many of my blog friends don't know this, but I LOVE shopping! This is going to be hard.) If you want to read more about my year without new clothes you can visit it at 7YearsBack. I'll be sharing more writing and projects for handmade living over there. Of course anything creative, such as this infinity scarf, will always have a mention on this blog. Though, probably with less explanation! In general, I like this blog to be less wordy and more image focused.

Happy New Year from me to you! I hope 2011 is everything you could ever wish for and more. I am excited that this is the year of the rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac because I always find myself being attracted to rabbits as a major motif for decorating my home. I also draw a lot of them, and started to draw this New Year's rabbit before I even knew it was the animal of the year! Anyways, its also time to get in gear and try to keep all those resolutions that were easy to make, but will be much harder to keep! I have several resolutions floating in my head; both personal and professional and I am going to try my hardest to be a good girl!

Christmas Card Illustration 2010

I didn't have time to make handmade cards this year due to my current illustration workload. (which I am really grateful for!) I decided to do an illustration and have some cards printed professionally and mailed to me. I am running a little behind this year, but I have always had good luck with Overnight Prints in terms of quality and speed of delivery. I thought it would be fun to have our whole family (which consists of several furbabies!) Photoshopped into a gingerbread wonderland! I love that the pictures are totally not to scale in relationship to each other. It's probably pretty accurate if we were measuring personality! I'll make sure to post some pictures of the printed cards when they come in the mail. I'm really looking forward to seeing them!

A Snowman and an Artwork Sale

Even though we haven't had our first real snow yet this year (very unusual!), I am starting to get into the spirit of winter and the holidays. Every year I get an itch to draw a snowman... maybe its because I don't get outside and make one anymore. When I was a kid, that was one of those things you just had to do! Who knows, maybe I will do it this year!

I also wanted to share that a bit later today I will be updating my Etsy shop with several illustrations that I no longer have room for. Our house is quite small and its actually a bit painful to get rid of some of my more favorite pieces! I plan to price them reasonably so that they will *hopefully* sell. There will be watercolors, oils and drawings. If you are looking for a Christmas gift or a piece of art for a nook in your home that needs a lil' something, please visit my shop!

An Artful Weekend

This past Saturday I led a ornament and card making workshop for children at the Windsor Heights community center for their "Windsor Wonderland" event. It was a really wonderful event and the kids (and adults too!) made some very creative work!

The next day, my husband Ken and I stopped by the Des Moines Art Center for their event, "Reindeer Roundup". There were crafts, cookies, hot chocolate and best of all, LIVE REINDEER! I even got to pet one! They were still quite young, and their fur was so soft! I just had to have my picture taken in front of their pen, they were so cute! After that, Ken and I braved the mall to take care of the majority of our Christmas shopping. (Glad it is mostly done!) I plan to make some gifts too... and of course share them here later!

After spending a lot of each day working on a children's book project, I have found that it helps to clear my mind and settle down by drawing in my sketchbook. Its sort of like stretching after you complete a hard workout. These are a few of my pages from the last few weeks.

Figure Painting Study

My most recent study of the figure. I painted the model from two different places in the room. I like the negative spaces that the two figures create together. I am also really enjoying using acrylics when I paint from life because they dry fast and I can stay loose as I try to record as much information as possible in the allotted studio time.

I love burnt marshmallows! I did this drawing on a textured watercolor paper and then quickly colored it in Photoshop. It is more of a color study than a finished illustration, but sometimes I like the look of a quickly thought out piece. (Plus I have a terrible head/chest cold that seems to be going around and my concentration is shot at the moment!)

These are a few recent sketches out of my sketchbook. I drew the turkey because I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and having my parents come and visit me. The second sketch page was done while the cats were laying around the living room. The fox sketch was just a study of the animal because I think they are majestic and interesting animals!
